Hollywood forms the Green Production Alliance

THE GREEN PRODUCTION ALLIANCE

Background

In 2008, feature film physical production executives and producers gathered to discuss environmental and procurement issues impacting their community. Recognizing the need to build partnerships between individuals passionate about sustainable practices, this group joined with environmental executives at the majors to identify potential areas for collaboration. Today, this group serves as the foundation of The Green Production Alliance.

Mission and Vision

The Alliance was created to collaboratively advance sustainability in the motion picture and television industry. The Alliance is a network of industry professionals committed to advancing environmental practices in the film, television, commercial, and new media communities. The Alliance offers a forum for sharing environmental information, developing common-use tools and resources, providing educational and training opportunities, and ultimately reducing the environmental impact of the industry and making sustainable business practices a norm.

Recent Successes

In 2009, members of the Alliance helped guide the development of two voluntary tools: 1) a carbon calculator for production; and 2) an interactive green vendor guide.

A website, GreenProductionGuide.com, is currently being created by the Green Committee of the Producer’s Guild of America to host both tools. The website will be free and accessible to the entire production community when launched in July 2010.

Next Steps

A Steering Committee, comprised of a mix of production executives, producers and below the line advocates, is being assembled to lead the Alliance. This Committee will: determine the roll out for the GreenProductionGuide.com and related voluntary tools, design a communications and outreach plan for the Alliance, and build a strategy for engaging additional stakeholders.
